Invisalign and Overbite: What to Know

An overbite means the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than usual. A mild overlap is normal. When the gap is large, it can affect how you bite, speak, and wear your teeth over time.

Whether Invisalign can improve your overbite depends on severity, jaw structure, and what your dentist sees at an in-person exam.

How overbites affect oral health

  • Tooth wear - uneven contact can erode enamel on certain teeth
  • Chewing efficiency - front teeth may do work meant for back teeth
  • Speech - severe overbites can interfere with some sounds
  • Jaw discomfort - bite strain may contribute to TMJ-related symptoms (learn more)
  • Hygiene - misalignment can make some areas harder to clean

Can Invisalign treat overbite?

Invisalign has advanced for many bite corrections, but not every overbite is an aligner case. Mild and moderate dental overbites (tooth-position driven) are often treatable with aligners, sometimes with elastics or attachments your dentist prescribes.

Skeletal overbites - where jaw size or position is the main issue - may need braces, appliances, or surgical orthodontics. Your dentist will tell you honestly if aligners are not the right tool.

Your dentist's role

Your treating dentist examines your bite in person, directs your care, and gives final approval of the plan in the Invisalign system. Digital setups are drafted under their direction by ClearlyClear's planning support. Many practices show an illustrative same-visit preview at the free consult - helpful context, not a guaranteed outcome.
