Invisalign and Crowns: What to Know

If you have dental crowns and want straighter teeth, you are not alone - especially among adults returning to orthodontics. Crowns do not automatically disqualify you from Invisalign, but they do require careful planning.

Your dentist decides what can move safely and how aligners interact with existing restorations.

Crowns and aligners: how they work together

A crown covers a prepared tooth. Aligners fit over the crown like any other tooth and apply gentle pressure to neighboring teeth - and sometimes to the crowned tooth itself, depending on your plan.

What your dentist evaluates:

  • Crown condition, margin health, and whether the tooth beneath is stable
  • Whether the crowned tooth should move or act as an anchor for adjacent movement
  • Bite forces after alignment - restorations must still function comfortably

Treatment begins with a digital scan (often iTero) so aligners are customized to your anatomy, crowns included.

What treatment looks like

  1. In-person exam - teeth, gums, crowns, and bite assessed together
  2. Digital planning - ClearlyClear's planning support drafts the setup under your dentist's direction; your dentist reviews and gives final approval in the Invisalign system
  3. Check-ins - your dentist checks crown integrity and tooth movement throughout treatment

Adults with prior dental work should read Invisalign for adults for other common considerations (compliance, gum health, timelines).

Benefits many crown patients value

  • Discreet correction without adding brackets over restored teeth
  • Removable aligners for thorough brushing around crown margins
  • Aligned bite - easier cleaning and more even force distribution, which matters when you have invested in restorations

Honest limits

Crowns cannot be whitened by aligners - aligners straighten; whitening is separate. Some crowned teeth should not move; others may need crown replacement after significant position changes. Your dentist explains tradeoffs before you accept treatment.
